Do our lives lift up His name?
I'm going through a study on many of the names of God. I'm wrestling with what it means to apply this knowledge of these various names that identify the character, abilities, and relationship between who He is and who we are. So far, a few names that have really caught my attention are Adonai Yahweh (Sovereign Lord), Rav-Chesed (Abounding in Love), and Melek Yahweh Tsabaot (King Lord of Hosts).
The sovereignty of God is a quality that we frequently need to be reminded of when we find ourselves in the midst of all kinds of circumstances that seem beyond our control. When you give your all in a situation and somehow it isn't enough. When a family member is going through some excruciating pain that you can't cure. When you find yourself stretched to the limit with work, school, family, and church. When you've waited on the Lord for months that have turned into years and you are still waiting. When you can't make sense out of where you are and what the Lord intends to do with all of the threads of your life.
"I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose'...I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it." Isaiah 46:9-11
In prayer and throughout the activities that we have been entrusted with day in and day out, how does it change our work and our character to know that God is sovereign? How can we take comfort in and offer that comfort to others, the reality that God's sovereignty can put our lives into a right perspective? We can trust Him when we can't see and don't understand because we know that all things are under His authority. Nothing happens outside of His watch. He cares intimately and He is deeply involved in the world and with each one of us. Everything that seems wrong now will be made right in His perfect timing. Questions we don't have answers to are not beyond God's knowledge. Weighty matters that we bear are not too heavy for Him.
One way that reflecting on the sovereignty of God is shaping my prayers is that I am keenly aware that all things that I'm concerned about are in His hands. He has determined the course that these matters should take. Nothing will surprise Him or thwart His plans. I want to know what it is to rest in His sovereignty on the things that I now wrestle with.
How has the sovereignty of God renewed your faith?
