Using Google for Research

Google Books (books.google.com)

Google has been scanning in books from libraries and publishers. This is a useful resource for searching the full-text of books. You can then identify books that just have a small section on your topic, search for quotes, or find the exact pages where a book talks about your topic.

For books that are no longer under copyright, you can see the full-text of the book. For books under copyright, you can see either limited pages or snippets of pages. When looking at the book, click the link for "Find in a library" to get the full book. If it's not at our library, you can request it through I-Share.

Google Scholar (scholar.google.com)

Google Scholar is a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. You can search for peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles. It is also a good resource for finding who cites a particular work - just click on the "cited by" link. Some items are available online for free. If it's not free, check TrinCat to see if we own the book or journal or order it through Interlibrary loan.
